MEB: Heading for China
The MEB is preparing a new economic mission to China.
Monegasque companies retain a strong interest in China. More than 70 business leaders and decision-makers from the Principality met to prepare for a new economic mission Macau in the second quarter of 2027, organised by the Monaco Economic Board (MEB). This meeting was organised with the support of Marie-Pascale Boisson, Monaco’s Ambassador to China, and provided an overview of the opportunities offered by a country that, despite its size and complexity, continues to offer considerable growth prospects for international companies. “China is now a major economic partner of Monaco,” the Ambassador noted.
The figures speak for themselves: over the past five years Monegasque exports to China have increased by 72%, while imports have risen by 57%. This dynamic reflects the strengthening of economic relations between the two countries, extending well beyond historical diplomatic ties, and the presence of the Monegasque national pavilion at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai for the fourth consecutive year in November, demonstrates the desire to heighten trade. Following this, the Monegasque Economic Board (MEB) is preparing an economic mission to Hong Kong and Macau. The objective is clear: to offer Monegasque companies an immersive experience at the heart of one of Asia’s most dynamic economic hubs, to increase meetings with local partners, and to gain a better understanding of the evolving market. As the world’s second-largest consumer market with over 400 million middle-income consumers, China maintains its position as the leading manufacturing power while accelerating its transition to an innovation-driven economy. Artificial intelligence, biopharmaceuticals, intelligent robotics, and green hydrogen are now among the most promising sectors.
Monegasque companies can also leverage the diversity of China’s territories, starting with the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau), which alone generates over 40% of China’s GDP.
Careful planning is required to establish a presence in China. The size of the market, the diversity of regional ecosystems and cultural differences necessitate a long-term strategy. However, several Monegasque companies are already demonstrating that this ambition can be achieved. Eurimpex, Forte Pharma, and Aton Green Energy have developed sustainable operations there, illustrating that Monegasque expertise has the ability to thrive in this demanding market. “You are the true ambassadors of our national economy,” Marie-Pascale Boisson emphasised to the assembled business leaders.
