Sophie Vincent met the MEB

14/06/2019

Thursday 13 June, Sophie Vincent, the new Director of IMSEE Monaco Statistics met MEB members at a talk, where she gave her vision for the institute and a preview of the main economic trends for the first quarter of 2019.

Launched in 2011, IMSEE has become an invaluable tool in the role it plays in the Principality’s future. Its many statistics publications inform government decisions on public policy, and for the business community its figures provide benchmarks for their forecasts and investments. After being welcomed by MEB Executive Director General, Guillaume Rose, Sophie Vincent reminded the audience of IMSEE’s role, missions and the way it operates. This is based on best practices such as confidentiality, impartiality and objectivity, as well its independence when it comes to methods. Continuity therefore but with areas to be developed. For example, the institute is already working on new publications such as gender pay gaps between men and women, and a study on violence against women. Sophie Vincent also wants to give IMSEE a higher profile and make it a vehicle of statistics culture in the Principality.

Its main priority is of course statistics: the 80-plus entrepreneurs present found out what the latest figures were for the Monegasque economy in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.

According to Sophie Vincent, 2019 saw a “soft start” with some indicators down, such as Monaco’s turnover (-7.2%). The Director added however that “results from a few large operators can very quickly make the difference”. Furthermore, 2018 was a record year for the number of industry sectors.Indeed, the number of organisations and particularly the ongoing rise in level of employment (+3.1%, an extra 1,631 jobs created) was a sign of confidence in the Principality.

Those wanting to know more can register to receive the IMSEE newsletter, a good way to keep up to date with the institute’s many publications, starting with the most comprehensive, Monaco en chiffres, that the MEB will distribute to members when it comes out on 28 June 2019.
